Shoe Box Collection for Tsunami VictimsDear Friend, If your heart has been moved by the desperate plight of tsunami victims, I think you will be excited about a unique and personal way you can help meet the urgent needs of a child traumatized by this disaster. This Easter season, Samaritan’s Purse is sponsoring a special Operation Christmas Child collection of gift-filled shoe boxes for girls and boys who survived the tsunami. I have just returned from South Asia, where I was coordinating our extensive relief projects in tsunami-stricken areas. As I walked through the ruined villages and crowded displacement camps, my heart ached to see so many children who were sad, fearful, and despondent. Government officials and church leaders in the region have appealed to Samaritan’s Purse to help by distributing shoe box gifts to the children through our Operation Christmas Child project. The shoe box gifts are an ideal way to lift their spirits and kindle hope in their hearts—while demonstrating that there is a God who loves and cares for them. What better time to collect these gifts than Easter, when we celebrate our Lord’s resurrection—the triumph of life over death and hope over despair? Because these children have lost virtually everything, we are asking that each box include a new T-shirt along with other essential items. Shoe box gifts should be mailed by April 4 directly to Samaritan’s Purse, 801 Bamboo Road, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607. Given the urgency of the situation, there is not time to open our nationwide network of collection centers. We have a brochure with labels available to help you participate in this Easter collection for tsunami victims. Even if you can’t pack a box, please prayerfully consider a generous gift so we can reach as many children as possible. Above all, please pray that God will use each shoe box for His glory. May God bless you. Sincerely, Franklin Graham NEED MORE INFORMATION? Call 1-800-353-5949 or email occinfo@samaritanspurse.org. Shoe box gifts for tsunami victims are being collected through April 4, 2005. You can drop your box off at the God Speed Ministry trailer at IHRA events between now and then or send them directly to the address below. WHERE SHOULD I SEND MY BOX? Shoe box gifts should be mailed directly to: Samaritan’s Purse 801 Bamboo Road P.O. Box 3000 Boone, NC 28607 Boxes also may be dropped off at the processing center in Boone. PLEASE NOTE: Operation Christmas Child's nationwide locations are not open for this special collection. Mail is the quickest way to get your shoe box to Samaritan's Purse for this special outreach. HOW SHOULD I PACK MY BOX? Packing a shoe box is simple and fun. The process will be familiar to millions of you who have sent Christmas gifts in the past. Each box is unique, and the contents can be as personal as you would like. Decide whether your box will be for a boy or a girl, and choose an age range: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Start by including a T-shirt in the size of the child you choose. For this special tsunami collection, we are recommending that boxes include school supplies, toys, hard candy, cuddly stuffed animals, and hygiene items. Pack them in an ordinary shoe box or a similar-sized container. Do not include war toys (because some of these children live in war-torn areas) or cold-weather clothing. Pray specifically for the child who will receive your box. You may want to include a card or brief personal note. Please include a check for $5 or more per box, payable to Samaritan's Purse, to help cover expenses such as overseas shipping.
