Dan Tebbetts' Story

Dan Tebbetts is suffering from bladder cancer and it seems as if we are running into brick walls.  Dan has been an inspirational person in many peoples’ lives.  Dan was diagnosed with cancer, went into remission this last year and after a 6 month check-up, was told that the cancer had returned into his bladder.  This was a blow to the whole family and the community that Dan has been involved with for so many years.  Dan is a Veteran of the Vietnam War and has been exposed to Agent Orange.  In the last year and a half since I have known this man, Dan has shared stories of his work ethic and how he has had to start out working 2 different jobs, working many hours of the day to ensure that the needs of his family were met.  Dan has also taken the responsibility of caring for family members when there was nobody else willing to step in.  From his strong work ethics, Dan has established a business as a used car salesman for several years due to his honesty and his sense of character.   His wife Jennell, has the same strong work ethic as Dan.  Starting from nothing and investing a sense of character that has made her and her husband a reputable couple in the Emporia area.  Jennell had previously been the Branch Manager of Bank of America in Emporia.  This last year she has been appointed Regional Sales Manager for Core First Bank also out of Emporia.  Since Dan has been informed that his cancer has returned, the family has looked for options in getting Dan the best form of Health Care that is available.  Because of the lack of insurance, the family turned toward the VA Hospital because of Dan’s military background.  It did take some arguing and convincing for him to even be seen there.  After several attempts, the VA agreed to see Dan.   He did have surgery to remove his bladder.  After opening Dan up, the family was informed that the cancer was too bad to continue.  Dan was given chemotherapy to try and reduce the cancer.  Family and doctors were hopeful that the cancer would shrink allowing the doctors to be able  to operate and give Dan the chance of life.  This March, after several months of enduring chemo treatments, the Dr.’s agreed to do another surgery to remove his bladder and reconstruct his system to make him another cancer success story.  However, after opening Dan up once again, the doctor’s discovered that yes the cancer had left his bladder, but had moved to his stomach area.  At that time, our beloved Dan, was given 13 months to live.  Dan was advised that chemo and radiation would be his best bet and was given a 20% chance of the treatment working.  To a family that has always lived off of strength and hope and not settling for anything, the news inspired the family to look toward an alternative answer.  The Doctor’s advised the family they may want to look at a second opinion.  Immediately, the family began checking out alternative resources.  Because of the inability to pay due to the lack of insurance, the family was told that they would need a $125,000 upfront, to be able to get into the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Again, Dan is a man that has impacted so many people’s lives that he has crossed.  Dan has so many friends.  Dan also takes an avid interest in drag racing.  He has had a career in drag racing and has been a member of that community for several of years.  Dan has built his own cars and has participated in several races at Heartland Park, Manhattan and other places in Kansas and Oklahoma.  This is Dan’s passion.  When he is not working, he is working on his dragster or fixing up another car.  Dan has built a strong reputation amongst the racing community because of his strong will and dedication to the sport.  His racing friends as well as friends throughout the Emporia community have rallied together to try and come up with fundraisers to help Dan get into the facility that he needs to ensure that the treatment that he needs is given to him.  It is a struggle, because in small towns, raising that kind of money is limited, especially in these economic times.  We need your help!  Dan has been a true inspiration to many of the people that he has touched over the years.  Dan has welcomed people into his life with open arms, no matter where they come from, no matter what their past or need.  Dan is the first person to give any amount of money to anyone to make sure their needs are being met.  This is our chance to give back to someone who does so much for everyone else and doesn’t expect anything in return.  Dan makes sure that he is there for someone; no matter what he may have going on.  Dan always has a smile on his face at all times and always has a story to share.   His friends and family are very saddened by Dan’s suffering.  The family has exhausted all available resources that are financially available to them.  The sad part is that Dan is selling his dragster and all of his racing equipment that he has worked all of his life to achieve.    This is a family that does not expect handouts and has the pride not to ask anyone for help.  It is sad that through these hard times, the healthcare system is making him give up his passion to ensure that he has the chance of life.  We are asking that you help us raise the money needed to get Dan into help him get into the Cancer Treatment Center  so that he may continue giving of himself and making a difference in the lives he touches.  This is not about handouts, but a healthcare system that is failing those who work hard, give everything they can and in return get no help when the need arises.  Again, we are asking for your support.  Due to the out of pocket money that is being spent and fundraising efforts, it may not be enough.  Please help us in helping someone who never asks for help.

John 1:1-5

In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. 4Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. 5The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

Ephesians 4:3-6

3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit–just as you were called to one hope when you were called– 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
